Message from MPHA Executive Director Cora McCorvey

While our country's current economic situation is creating tremendous challenges for the American people and our government, the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act provides an opportunity for public agencies like MPHA to take action to make a difference.

Investing $18.2 million in ARRA funding will give a boost to our local economy, improve the quality of our housing stock, and better preserve these affordable housing resources for the future. Please visit this special Webpage in the future for regular updates of our ARRA-funded capital improvements program.

A national study completed in 2006 by private research firm Econsult — Assessing the Economic Benefits of Public Housing — concluded that every dollar of public housing expenditures doubles itself in terms of economic return — meaning MPHA's $18.2 million in ARRA-funded work could inject $36 million in business activity into the local economy through jobs, spending by vendors and contractors, and the purchases of goods and services. The study also concludes that $150,000 of expenditures in capital dollars results in the creation of one (1) new job.
